The eastern half of Gravesend is town: a riverside centre, flats above shops, terraces behind them, and estates further out. Then within a couple of miles the district turns rural at Chalk, Shorne and Cobham, with Shorne Woods country park sitting between them.

The flats above Gravesend’s shops and pubs are some of the hardest properties on our patch to isolate in a hurry, and it is worth solving on a calm afternoon rather than at midnight.

The problem is that the flat was carved out of a building that was originally one property, so the incoming main frequently arrives downstairs, in the shop, in a cupboard behind the counter, or in a rear yard nobody has a key to. The valve inside the flat, where there is one, may only control part of it.

Find out now which valve in your flat closes what, and find out whether there is a shared shut off and who holds the key to it. If the answer is the shop below and the shop is shut at night, that is exactly the thing worth knowing before you need it. Where a flat genuinely has no usable isolation of its own, fitting one is a small job and it changes what a burst costs you.

At the village end the problem inverts. Properties at Chalk, Shorne and Cobham tend to have space and no shortage of places for a pipe to run, which means a leak can be well established before anyone sees it. An unexplained meter reading or a patch of damp deserves more attention out there than it would in a terrace, where the same fault would have announced itself inside a day.
