Three installs, three manufacturers

The photographs on this page are three separate finished jobs. A Sync Energy untethered unit with its own external isolator, run in armoured cable clipped neatly down the brickwork. A Hypervolt tethered unit on a brick pier by a side gate, with the cable coiled on the wall rather than left in a heap. An Andersen unit with the cable concealed, which is the one people buy when they care what the front of the house looks like.

Three different manufacturers is worth saying out loud, because a lot of installers only fit the one brand they are set up for. Being brand agnostic means the conversation starts with where your car parks and what your supply can take, rather than with the box somebody already has in the van.

What actually decides the job

Where the car sits, and which way round it parks, because that decides tethered or untethered and which side the socket needs to be. How far the run is from the consumer unit, because the cable route is most of the labour. What the existing supply and main fuse can carry. Whether the wall is brick, render or timber. And where an isolator can go so the thing can be switched off without going indoors.

Charge point work is notifiable electrical work and there are national schemes and grant routes attached to it that carry their own requirements. We are not going to make a claim on this page about which of those the firm holds until it is confirmed in writing, because that is exactly the sort of claim that ought to be checkable.

EV chargers: common questions

Tethered or untethered?

Tethered means the cable lives on the unit and you never hunt for it. Untethered means a tidier wall and a cable you carry. Where the car parks usually decides it faster than any spec sheet.

Can my house take one?

Most can. It comes down to the incoming supply, the main fuse and what else is already on the board. It is checked on site before anything is quoted.

Can you fit a unit I have already bought?

Yes. The three on this page are three different manufacturers, so a unit you have chosen yourself is not a problem.
