The Triangle is the top of it, where Westow Hill, Westow Street and Church Road meet under the transmitter mast. From there the ridge splits in two, Central Hill running north west and Church Road south west, with the park dropping away east and Gipsy Hill falling to the station.

Why the radiators are hot at the top and stone cold at the bottom

An open vented system, the sort fed by a small tank in the loft, is open to the air by design. The water in it is never short of oxygen, and oxygen, water and steel radiators do the only thing they can do together, which is rust from the inside. The result is magnetite, a fine black iron oxide that turns the water the colour of ink. While the pump runs it stays in suspension, and where the water slows it settles. The slowest water in the house is at the bottom of a radiator and inside the heat exchanger.

So the first sign is a radiator hot across the top and cold across the bottom third, where bleeding changes nothing because there is no air in it. That cold band is a bed of sludge the water now flows over rather than through, and in a tall house the far end of the circuit goes first, so the top floor is lukewarm while downstairs is fine. The boiler shows it differently. A heat exchanger with restricted flow heats the little water still passing through far too fast, so the burner fires, hits its limit inside a minute and shuts down, then starts again. That is short cycling, and it usually arrives with a kettling noise and a pump gone from a hum to a whine.

There are three honest answers and only one is right for any given house. A chemical clean, where cleaner circulates for a week before the system is drained and refilled, is real but modest, and suits a system that is dirty rather than choked. A powerflush is a different job, a high volume pump on the system for most of a day, worked radiator by radiator with a magnet on each. And sometimes the truthful answer is that the system is finished, because radiators corroding from the inside for decades are thin, and flushing hard finds the thin places and turns them into pinholes a fortnight later. A magnetic filter goes on afterwards and never instead, because it catches what the system keeps making but cannot reach what is already lying in your radiators.
