The ground climbs from flat, low lying Lower Sydenham in the east up past Kirkdale to Sydenham Hill and the Crystal Palace ridge, one of the highest points in London. The public sewer sits at a fixed depth under the road and everything above it drains by gravity. A lower ground floor on a steep street can sit level with that depth or below it, so gravity has nothing left to give and the waste has to be lifted mechanically.
