Covering Dartford (east), Stone, Wilmington, Bean, Hawley, Darenth and part of Joyden’s Wood.

Stone sits up against the Dartford boundary on one side, Wilmington and Hawley climb away to the south, Darenth sits down in the valley, and Bean is out towards the Bluewater side of the district. Between them the housing runs from cottages that predate the railway to estate builds finished in the last few years.

The practical consequence is distance. Plenty of properties out here are detached, set back, and served by pipe runs a good deal longer than anything in a terrace. That changes how long water takes to reach a tap, how quickly it goes cold in a pipe, and how a leak behaves before anybody notices it.

Outside taps, garden supplies and the long run to the garage

Almost every call we take about a soaking lawn or a mysteriously high meter reading in this district turns out to be an outside supply. An outside tap, a run to a detached garage, a feed to a garden office, a burst on a pipe somebody laid to a greenhouse in the eighties and forgot about.

The reason it hides for so long is that the water goes straight into the ground and there is nothing to see. If your meter is ticking with every tap in the house shut off, that is the test that proves it, and it is worth doing before anyone lifts a slab.

The other thing worth knowing here is that any outside supply needs isolating and draining before the first hard frost. A tap left live over winter splits, and it splits inside the wall where the repair is a great deal bigger than the tap. If yours has no indoor isolator, that is a small job now and a large one in January.

DA2: questions we actually get asked

I’m in Joyden’s Wood. Is that DA2 or DA5?

It is split between both, which is why nobody in Joyden’s Wood ever gets a straight answer. Part of it falls in DA2 and part in DA5. We cover the whole of it either way, so you do not need to work out which side of the line your road is on before you ring.

Is Stone DA2 or DA9?

Also split. Stone straddles DA2 and DA9, with the Greenhithe end falling into DA9. Both are on our list, so it makes no practical difference to whether we come out.

Do you cover Bean and Hawley?

Yes. Both are DA2 along with Darenth and Wilmington. They are the further-flung end of the district rather than anywhere we do not go.

Is the water out here as hard as everyone says?

Yes. This is chalk country and the water carries a great deal of dissolved mineral. It shows up as scale on kettles and shower screens, and less visibly inside heat exchangers and immersion elements. It is the main reason equipment in this area wears out sooner than the brochure suggests.
