Eynsford has the ford, the hump-backed bridge and the railway viaduct above it. Farningham sits just north across the A20. South Darenth, Horton Kirby and Sutton-at-Hone follow the river down towards Dartford. All five are small, all five are old, and between them they contain more genuinely period property than the rest of our patch put together.
Old buildings are not harder to work on, but they are less predictable. Pipework gets added rather than replaced, so a single house can have lead, iron, copper and plastic all doing something, and the joints between generations are where the trouble usually is.
What the valley does to plumbing
Two things matter out here that barely register elsewhere on our patch. The first is that some of the older and more isolated properties are on private drainage rather than a mains sewer. If yours is, a blockage is a different animal entirely and the answer is not the same as rodding a shared run.
The second is cold. Outbuildings, stables, converted barns and unheated utility rooms all hold pipework that nobody heats, and the valley sits low enough to catch frost when the ridges above it stay clear. Every winter the same calls come in from the same sort of building.
If you have a run in an unheated space, the useful jobs to do before the weather turns are lagging what you can reach, fitting an isolator so it can be drained rather than just switched off, and knowing which valve does what. Ten minutes in October is worth a great deal in January.

DA4: questions we actually get asked
Is Eynsford really the same postcode district as Dartford?
The post town is Dartford and the district is DA4, yes, even though the two places feel nothing alike. Farningham, South Darenth, Horton Kirby and Sutton-at-Hone are all DA4 as well.
How do I know if Iām on a septic tank or the mains?
The giveaway is usually an inspection cover and a vent somewhere in the garden rather than at the boundary, plus a history of the previous owner mentioning emptying. If nobody has ever told you, it is worth establishing before you have a problem, not during.
A pipe in my outbuilding has frozen. Can I thaw it myself?
Gently, yes. Warm cloths or a hairdryer on low, working from the tap end back. Never a naked flame. And turn the water off first, because if the pipe has already split you will find out the moment it thaws.
Do you carry parts for older fittings?
Some of them. Imperial pipe sizes, obsolete cistern valves and discontinued tap cartridges all turn up out here, and where something has to be ordered we will say so on the day rather than leaving you guessing. It is one of the reasons a quote on a period property is given after a look rather than over the phone.
