Blackfen was laid out and built almost entirely between the wars, street after street of semis put up in a handful of years. Lamorbey sits beside it around the park, north Sidcup fills the gap down to the station, and Longlands runs along the edge shared with DA14.

A house here can look thoroughly modern and still have circuits in it that predate almost everything plugged into them. The clues are physical rather than technical, and any homeowner can spot them.

Round pin sockets, or sockets with no earth pin, mean genuinely old wiring and should not be in use. Fabric or rubber sheathed cable visible in the loft or under the floor is past its life; the insulation goes brittle and crumbles when disturbed, which is why the light that has worked for forty years fails the week somebody goes into the loft for the Christmas decorations. A fuse box with rewireable fuse carriers and no RCD is another.

None of that means a house is dangerous today. It does mean a rewire is a question of when rather than if, and it means small jobs get more expensive when every one of them turns into a discussion about the circuit it sits on.

The useful thing is knowing which of those you have before you plan a kitchen or a loft conversion, because that is the point at which it stops being an abstract question.
