Sidcup itself has a proper high street and a station, with Foots Cray and North Cray strung along the Cray valley below it, Longlands to the west, Ruxley out towards the Orpington side, and part of Albany Park at the northern end. The housing is mostly interwar and post-war, in reasonable condition, and it is old enough that a good proportion of it is now on its second or third consumer unit and its third or fourth boiler.
When the fuse board trips, and what to check first
Almost every house in DA14 now has an RCD or two on the board, and the calls we get here are more often about a board that keeps tripping than about anything dramatic.
Before you ring anybody, there is a sequence worth running. Unplug everything that was in use when it went. Kettles, toasters, washing machines and outdoor equipment are the usual culprits, and a failing element in any of them will trip a whole board. Then reset. If it holds, plug things back one at a time and you will find the offender yourself in ten minutes.
If it trips again with nothing plugged in, the fault is in the fixed wiring or in something hard wired, which means a shower, a cooker, an immersion heater, a boiler or the lighting circuits. At that point stop, leave the affected circuit off, and get it looked at properly.
The one thing not to do is keep resetting it. A residual current device trips because it has detected current going somewhere it should not, and forcing it back on repeatedly is not persistence, it is ignoring a smoke alarm.
