Walderslade takes its name from a wood in a valley, and the valley is real. It is one of the dry chalk valleys cut into the North Downs during the ice ages, with housing running up both sides of it and onto the plateau above. Green belt separates the whole area from the rest of the Medway towns, Capstone country park holds Gillingham and Hempstead off to the east, and the M2 closes it in along the south.

Why microbore pipework decides a radiator swap in Walderslade
A lot of the heating here was installed in microbore, which is exactly what you would expect from houses put up in volume in the nineteen sixties and seventies. Instead of a flow and return in fifteen millimetre copper looping the ground floor and picking up radiators on the way, microbore runs eight millimetre or ten millimetre soft copper, usually in coils, often from a manifold tucked into the airing cupboard or under a floor, with a small pair of tails going out to each radiator on its own. It went in because it was quick. Soft coil threads under joists and round corners without a fitting every two feet, it uses less copper, it makes less mess in a room that still has to be plastered, and on a site building the same house forty times over that adds up. The catch is the bore itself. A fifteen millimetre pipe will carry loose debris along with the water and think nothing of it. Eight millimetre will not. Anything that settles in a bore that small is already a restriction, and a restriction slows the flow down that leg, which lets more settle, which slows it again.
The symptom is lopsided heat. One radiator, or one end of the house, stays cool while the boiler fires away and the pump sounds healthy. Bleeding it releases no air. The valve opens fully and nothing changes, because the trouble is upstream of the valve.
Balancing microbore is fiddly work rather than a five minute job, because the lockshields have a narrow useful range and a quarter turn moves more than you would think. A power flush helps less here than people expect, for the same reason the leg blocked in the first place. The machine takes the easiest route, which is the legs that are already clear, and it struggles to get any real velocity down one that has half closed. What tends to work is slower and more particular, isolating and flushing each leg on its own at the manifold, and accepting that a leg which will not clear may need renewing rather than rescuing. Then there is the boiler question. A new condensing boiler is designed around a flow rate and a temperature drop across the system, and existing microbore may or may not hand it either. That one is genuinely a per property answer. It depends on the bore, the layout, how many radiators hang off each leg and what state the pipe is in, and the honest version is to establish it before the old boiler comes off the wall, not after.
