Emergency Boiler Repair in Dartford (DA1)

Dartford, Crayford and Barnes Cray have boilers of almost any age and make on their walls, so when one stops, the most useful thing to do before ringing is read its badge.

Gas work is carried out by Gas Safe registered engineers we work with. They show you their Gas Safe ID card, and any certificate for the work comes from them.

DA1 has more households than any other DA district, and the Valuation Office’s figures for when its homes were built run from one end of the scale to the other: 2,330 from before 1900, and 4,800 from 2009 onwards, the largest single band in the district. For a boiler that has just stopped, that spread matters more than it sounds. A house from before 1900 can have a combi fitted two winters ago, and a flat finished in 2010 can still have the boiler it was built with. So the age of the house tells us very little about what is on the wall. The make, the model and the exact version tell us a great deal, and all three are printed on the boiler itself.

The house gives away its age. The badge gives away the boiler’s.

About one household in four in DA1, 6,092 at the 2021 Census, lives in a purpose-built block of flats. In a flat the boiler is often in a kitchen or hall cupboard, and on a Vaillant or a Worcester the badge you want is on the underside, facing whatever has been stacked on the shelf below it.

The badge, the code, the gauge

Start with the badge, because everything else hangs off it. On a Vaillant or a Worcester it sits on the underside of the boiler, so hold the phone flat beneath it with the camera facing up and take the picture without trying to see the screen. On an Ideal it can be on the front panel, the top or the underside, most often at the bottom left. On a Baxi it is usually on the drop-down panel at the front. None of them needs the casing off, and if reaching the badge seems to need a screwdriver, stop there. On the badge you want the model name, the serial number and a short number in three groups: two digits, three digits, two digits. That last one is the GC number, GC for Gas Council, and it is the most useful thing on the label. Each GC number belongs to one model at one output on one type of gas. A Worcester Greenstar 4000 at 25kW on natural gas is 47-800-30, and the same boiler built for LPG is 47-800-31, so the number separates two boilers that look identical from across a kitchen. If your boiler runs on bottled gas rather than mains gas, tell us that too, since its badge carries the LPG version’s number. Read it to us and we know which boiler we are talking about before anyone has picked up a tool. Ideal’s own advice runs the same way: having the model details ready helps the engineer bring the right tools and parts.

Photograph it even if you can read it out.

Then the display. Photograph it exactly as it is, letters, dots and all, and if it is flashing between two things, catch both. A code tells an engineer where to start looking, not which part has failed, so treat it as the start of the conversation rather than a shopping list. Then the gauge. Note the figure it shows with the boiler cold, and give us the number rather than a verdict on it, because what counts as normal changes from one maker to the next. An Ideal Logic+ normally sits between 1 and 2 bar, and will not run at all below 0.3. Three photos, badge, display and gauge, answer most of the questions we would otherwise ask one at a time down the phone.

Have the photos open on your phone when you ring.

It is not always that tidy. Badges fade, peel, or end up behind a unit fitted round the boiler later. If yours cannot be read, say so, and give us the make from the front panel. An unidentified boiler can still be looked at. It only means the question of which part waits until the engineer is standing in front of it.

If the badge shows a boiler old enough that a new one deserves a fair hearing, we also arrange boiler installations, and the same photos give that conversation a head start.

Boiler questions in Dartford

My house in Dartford is Victorian. Is the boiler likely to be old as well?

Not necessarily. Boilers usually get replaced more than once in a house’s life, so the badge, not the brickwork, says how old yours is. The age of the house matters more for the pipework and the route of the flue.

Every flat in our block has the same boiler. Will the same part fit mine?

Do not assume it. Boilers that look alike can be built at different outputs or for a different gas, and each has its own GC number. In a block finished since 2009 the boiler may still be the one the developer fitted, but only the badge says which version went into your flat. Send us the number from your own boiler, not the one from upstairs.

I can see a serial number but no GC number. Will that do?

Send it anyway, with the model name and a photo of the whole label. Installation manuals can list the GC number too: Worcester’s do, so check any paperwork left with the house.

Should I look up the code and buy the part myself?

No. The same code can come from several faults, so a part bought on the strength of a code alone is a guess, and a wasted one if it is wrong. The code is where the engineer starts, the badge says which boiler the parts must match, and only testing at the boiler shows what has failed. Send us both and leave the buying to whoever opens the casing.

Excellent service. We had a blockage in our main pipe which other plumbers failed to identify. We called Farrell who arrived within an hour the same evening, immediately identified the blockage and removed it, giving us our bathroom back. Highly recommended and will definitely call again for future issues.
