Emergency Boiler Repair in Erith (DA8)
When the heating stops in an Erith home on a prepayment gas meter, look at the meter before the boiler. No credit, or work on the street, stops the gas, and the boiler may need resetting after.

Gas work is carried out by Gas Safe registered engineers we work with. They show you their Gas Safe ID card, and any certificate for the work comes from them.
The 2021 Census found 71% of DA8 households heating with mains gas and nothing else, lower than in any of the other seventeen DA districts on our list. Much of the rest is electricity: 14% of households here heat with electricity alone, and most of the remainder use more than one kind of heating. That has a plain consequence on a cold morning. Before anyone opens a toolbag, it helps to know what heats the house and which meter feeds it, because a home in Erith, Northumberland Heath or Slade Green can have a gas meter on prepayment, an electricity meter on prepayment, or both, and a gas boiler depends on both. It will not run without electricity: Worcester’s manual is plain that even its frost protection only works while the boiler has power. An empty electricity meter can look exactly like a boiler fault from the radiator side, and so can an empty gas one. Of the two, the electricity meter is the easier to overlook: with no power the boiler’s display goes dark, and a dark boiler looks broken when all it may lack is electricity.
Check both meters before you ring anyone.
Meter credit and the boiler reset
Start with the hob, if you have a gas one. If it lights, gas is reaching the house and the fault is on the boiler side, which is the side to ring us about. If nothing lights, the gas has stopped before it reached the boiler. Worcester’s own homeowner checks put the other gas appliances right next to prepayment credit.
A prepayment gas meter switches the gas off when the credit runs out, and it does it at the meter, so every gas appliance in the house stops together. Emergency credit exists for this moment, and on a smart meter it is normally taken through the in-home display, but it is a loan: it comes back off your next top-up. Standing charges keep building while the meter has no credit, and a top-up can go first to paying back emergency credit or a debt, which is why the screen can show less than you put on. Credit back on the meter does not always mean gas back in the pipe. British Gas tells customers to follow the instructions on the meter’s own screen to switch it back on, and before you do, turn off every gas appliance in the house, the hob and any gas fire included. Then go to the boiler. If it called for heat while the gas was off, it may have tried to light, failed and locked itself out. A Vaillant ecoTEC plus, for one, goes into fault mode and shows F.28 after five unsuccessful attempts at ignition, and Vaillant’s instruction is to check the gas is on before pressing reset. British Gas says the same in general terms: once a prepayment meter has switched off, the boiler may need a reset, done by the manufacturer’s instructions. That reset is the whole of the householder’s part.
Nothing inside the casing needs touching for any of this.
If there is credit on the meter and still no gas, look at the emergency control valve, the lever on the pipe going into the meter. In line with the pipe is on. A quarter turn across it is off, and British Gas points out that a valve left in the off position will keep the supply off whatever the screen says. If it was turned off because somebody smelled gas, Cadent’s advice is that it stays off until you have been told it is safe. And if the whole road has gone off together, your meter is not the problem, and nothing you do at your end will bring the gas back.
If the hob lights and the boiler will not, ring us.
On a call like this the engineer works from the supply inwards: gas reaching the boiler and power reaching it first, then the question of why it will not light. A meter that has switched itself off cannot be mended from the boiler side, and a boiler that keeps locking out with both present has a fault no top-up will touch.
If the gas is back, the reset has not cleared it and the boiler proves too old to be worth another part, we also arrange boiler installations, which is a different conversation with its own page.
Boiler questions in Erith
Our flat in Erith is all electric. Does any of this apply?
Only the part about meters. No gas supply means no gas boiler to reset, and an empty electricity meter stops electric heating just the same. Electric boilers that feed radiators have their own page, on Belvedere.
The gas has gone off along our whole road in Slade Green. Do we ring you first?
Not first. A whole road losing gas is a network matter, and SGN runs the gas network across south London and Kent. Its engineers revisit each home to carry out safety checks and turn the supply back on, but they do not mend boilers. If the hob lights afterwards and the boiler still will not, ring us.
I topped up but the meter shows less credit than I paid. Is it faulty?
Probably not. A top-up can go first to paying back emergency credit or a debt, and to the standing charges that built up while the meter was empty. Only what is left shows as credit.
Why did the hob come back on its own when the boiler did not?
A hob does nothing until you light it. A boiler that called for heat while the gas was off may already have tried, failed and stopped itself, and it waits for someone to reset it. Worcester notes that some codes will not clear with a simple reset, and Baxi says frequent lockouts mean a fault. If the reset does not hold, that is the point to ring.

I would like thank Mr. Ferrell from London City Plumber. Very good and timely advise, really appreciate it. He is very helpful, and guided me with the options available. I would definitely recommend him.
Excellent service. We had a blockage in our main pipe which other plumbers failed to identify. We called Farrell who arrived within an hour the same evening, immediately identified the blockage and removed it, giving us our bathroom back. Highly recommended and will definitely call again for future issues.
