A boiler change, and the new boiler is an Ideal Atlantic 30.
That is it on the wall, with the 30 on the front panel and the flue coming off the top, turning through an elbow and running level straight into the wall to its right. Round the pipe where it goes in, the hole has been filled and not painted yet, and down the left hand side is a strip of wall still to be decorated. We would rather show you the job the day it went in than wait for the paint.
The flue
Every boiler like this one needs a flue. It is the pipe that takes what the boiler burns out of the house, and on a modern boiler it is two pipes in one, the fumes going out through the middle and the air the boiler burns coming in round the outside. This one is a horizontal flue, straight off the top and out through the nearest wall, which is the shortest way out there is and the one people mean when they search "boiler flue through wall".
New boiler, new flue
A flue is made by the boiler’s maker to go with that boiler, and it is part of how the boiler is designed to run safely, so the flue left behind by the old boiler is the wrong part for the new one even when it lines up with the hole in the wall. That is the plain answer to two things people search, "does a new boiler need a new flue" and "can you use the existing flue with a new boiler", and on a boiler change like this the flue goes in new with the boiler. The hole in the wall is a different question. Where the old flue went out is often where the new one goes out too, and then the job is to take the new pipe through it and fill round it, which is what you can see round this one. Where it cannot, because the new boiler is a different shape, hangs in a different place or the old position is no longer allowed, the flue has to go out where it is allowed to, and that decides where the boiler hangs rather than the other way round. None of it shows once a room is decorated, which is why we like a photograph taken on the day.
Where the flue goes is the decision. The pipe is the easy part.
Under the boiler
Below it are the copper pipes, the white condensate pipe running across to the side, and the black system filter with its orange cap. Those are the same parts we went through on the combi installation on a bare wall, so we will not go over them twice here.
The boiler change
Our boiler page says a replacement is the whole job or it is not worth doing, and the flue is part of the whole job, the same as the gas run in the new boiler gas pipe size post.
Ring 07546 185778 if your boiler is due for changing. We look at where the flue can go as well as the boiler, and you get it in writing before anything is agreed.
