Boiler Repair, Service & Installation in Penge (SE20)
Penge is a district of flats, and in a flat the boiler is often in the kitchen or a cupboard off the hall, close enough that every new sound gets noticed. Where a noise comes from tells you most of what you need to know.

Who installs and services boilers in Penge?
London City Plumbers arranges new boilers, yearly services and repairs in Penge, Anerley and the SE20 side of Crystal Palace, and the gas engineers we work with do the boiler itself. We look after the pipes, pumps, valves and radiators round it, which is where many heating noises start. To book, ring or WhatsApp 07546 185778 with your postcode.
The 2021 Census counted 11,054 households in SE20. 44.1% live in purpose-built flats and 18.7% in converted or shared houses, so more than six in ten are flats, and 72.5% of households heat with mains gas alone. The Valuation Office puts a third of the district’s properties, 33.6%, before 1900, and 14.0% between 1973 and 1982. When a Penge boiler starts making a new noise, the first job is finding whether it is in the boiler or in the pipework.
Name the noise first.
Noises from the boiler casing
A boiler that has always been quiet and starts making a new noise is telling you something, and each sound points somewhere different. A bang or a soft thump as the burner lights means the gas is igniting a fraction late, after some has built up. Switch the boiler off and leave it off until it has been looked at: this is gas work, and it goes to the engineer. A rising rumble, or a whistle like a kettle while the heating runs, comes from water boiling in spots inside the heat exchanger, usually because scale or debris has narrowed the waterways. A hum or a roar that grows over weeks often comes from the fan that pushes the flue gases out, as its bearings wear. Repeated clicking without the burner catching is the ignition trying and failing. All four are inside the casing. Outside it, a buzz or grind from a pump in an airing cupboard, a gurgle in the pipes and a creak from radiators as they warm are ours to look at, and they are easily mistaken for the boiler.
What helps when you ring is a description, or better, a recording. Hold the phone near the boiler when the heating first comes on, then again once it has been running a while. Note whether the noise comes with the hot water, the heating or both, and whether the needle on the pressure gauge moves. A noise that only happens when a tap runs is a different fault from one that only happens with the radiators on.
A bang on lighting is not one to wait on.
Ring 07546 185778 with the make of boiler, when the noise happens and how long it has been doing it, and you will be told straight away whether it is a job for us, for the engineer, or for both.
When the noise turns out to be a worn part on an old boiler, the repair has to be weighed against a new one, and we also arrange boiler installations in SE20 when that is the better answer.
Boiler questions in Penge
How much is a new boiler in Penge?
It depends on the boiler, where it goes and what else changes with it, so there is no figure on the website. The engineer looks at the job first, and you get a written quote before any work starts.
How often should a boiler in a Penge flat be serviced?
Once a year, like any gas boiler. The yearly service is also when a noise that has crept in is most likely to be caught before it turns into a breakdown.
Do you cover Anerley and Crystal Palace?
Yes. SE20 takes in Penge, Anerley and part of Crystal Palace, and Sydenham SE26 and Upper Norwood SE19 next door are covered too.
Why does my boiler bang when it comes on?
A bang as it lights usually means the gas is lighting late. Turn the boiler off and ring us. It needs an engineer to look inside the casing before it is used again.
Is a noisy boiler dangerous?
Most noises are wear or debris rather than danger. A bang on lighting is the exception, and so is any noise that comes with a smell of gas or fumes. For gas, switch off and ring the emergency number.
The noise is in the pipes, not the boiler. Who do I call?
Us. Pipe noise, pumps, valves and radiators are our own work, and where the sound is usually tells us which part is at fault.

I would like thank Mr. Ferrell from London City Plumber. Very good and timely advise, really appreciate it. He is very helpful, and guided me with the options available. I would definitely recommend him.
Excellent service. We had a blockage in our main pipe which other plumbers failed to identify. We called Farrell who arrived within an hour the same evening, immediately identified the blockage and removed it, giving us our bathroom back. Highly recommended and will definitely call again for future issues.
