Conventional to combi conversion

What is a combi boiler conversion?

A combi boiler conversion takes out the hot water cylinder and the loft tanks of a conventional or system boiler and puts one combi on the wall, heating water as it is drawn, off the mains. The old pipework is capped or removed, and London City Plumbers arranges the boiler itself with the gas engineers we work with.

The first photograph is the after. A white wall-hung boiler with a dial gauge and a lit display, against a bare patched strip of wall, with a black magnetic filter and red-handled valves beside its top.

The second is the old hot water cylinder in its cupboard, covered in yellow foam, with a red-handled valve, copper pipes and a small red pump on the wall beside it.

The third is the kitchen wall stripped back to bare board and plaster above white tiles. The round hole is where the old boiler and its flue were, and old pipes hang off the ceiling.

Conventional to combi

A conventional system, also called a regular or heat-only system, is a boiler, a hot water cylinder in a cupboard, a cold water tank and a small feed and expansion tank in the loft. The hot water is stored in the cylinder and reheated. A combi is one unit that heats the water as it is drawn, off the mains, with no cylinder and no tanks. The cylinder and the tanks come out, their pipework is capped or removed, the cupboard and the loft are cleared, and the hot taps are fed off the combi. Often the boiler moves and a new flue goes through the wall. A magnetic filter goes on the return and the old radiators are flushed. Our side is the cylinder, the tanks, the pipework, the wall, the filter and the controls. The boiler itself is something we arrange. Gas work is carried out by Gas Safe registered engineers we work with. They show you their Gas Safe ID card, and any certificate for the work comes from them.

That is the work behind a combi boiler conversion, a conventional boiler to combi, and much of a system boiler to combi.

One bathroom or more

Converting to a combi boiler suits a home with one bathroom.

Where more than one shower runs at once, or there is a big bath, a cylinder with a system boiler can be the better answer, and our boiler installations page says so.

The work

We look at the house, the hot water it uses and where a boiler would best hang.

Then the pipework is made good, the wall is prepared, and the controls are set and explained.

Common questions

Should I convert to a combi boiler?

If the home has one bathroom, the hot water runs out, or the cylinder and the tanks take up space you want back, often yes. Where more than one shower runs at once, or there is a big bath, a system boiler with a cylinder can serve the house better.

Can a system boiler be converted to a combi?

Yes. The cylinder comes out, its pipework is capped, and the combi takes over the hot water. A system boiler already runs sealed with no loft tanks, so there is less to clear than with a conventional one.

Conventional boiler vs combi?

A conventional boiler stores hot water in a cylinder fed off tanks in the loft and reheats it on a timer. A combi heats water as you draw it and stores none.

What happens to the pipework in a conversion?

The runs that served the cylinder and the tanks are capped or taken out, the hot taps are piped off the combi, and a magnetic filter goes on the heating return. The gas side is the engineers' work.

Where does the combi go?

Usually where the old boiler hung, if the flue can still go out there. Otherwise a kitchen or utility wall with a clear route outside for the flue and pipework that can reach.

What happens to the airing cupboard?

It comes back as a cupboard once the cylinder is out and the pipes are capped.
