Under sink reverse osmosis installation

A Frizzlife PX600 reverse osmosis filter fitted under a kitchen sink, with its own tap. The three connections it needs and what the clamp on the waste is for.

This is the finished job with the cupboard door open. The white and black unit standing upright beside the waste is a Frizzlife PX600, and the slim black tap next to the chrome mixer on the sink is its tap. The mixer still runs the ordinary hot and cold. The black tap gives the filtered water and nothing else.

Three connections

An under sink reverse osmosis unit needs three things plumbed to it, and the second photograph shows two of them. The first is the feed. It comes off the cold supply through a small valve, the one with the blue handle on the left of that frame, with a white line running off it to the unit, so the filter can be shut off on its own without touching the rest of the kitchen. The second is the drain. Reverse osmosis works by pushing water through a membrane, and the water that does not go through carries away what the membrane held back, so it has to go somewhere, and that somewhere is the sink waste. That is the black clamp on the white waste pipe with the red line going into it. It sits on the pipe above the trap, so the trap still does its job of keeping the smell of the drain out of the cupboard. The third is the tap, which needs its own hole in the sink or the worktop and its own line up to it. None of the three is complicated on its own. What makes it a plumber’s job is doing all three in a cupboard that already holds a waste, the hot and cold supplies and an appliance hose or two, all wanting the same space, and leaving every joint dry.

The display

The front of the unit carries a display. When this was taken it read 15 under OUT, with TDS beside the number, which is the unit’s own reading of what is still dissolved in the water it gives out.

Under that sit three lights, one for each of its filters, and two buttons, Reset and Flush.

Pipework under a sink

This is the same cupboard as most of the pipework jobs we do, a supply, a waste and a trap, with one more thing connected to each.
